You’re probably either thinking “I don’t care what people think” or “I don’t really have that issue”. The reality is that we ALL struggle with this in one way or another. We must be honest with ourselves. [/vc_column_text][mk_padding_divider size=”20″][mk_blockquote style=”line-style” font_family=”Nunito” font_type=”google” font_size_combat=”true” text_size=”14″]CON·SUME



(of a feeling) absorb all of the attention and energy of (someone).

Synonyms: devour, obsess, grip, overwhelm[/mk_blockquote][mk_padding_divider size=”20″][vc_column_text]I want you to really process that word “consume”. 

A little backstory – I struggle with Anxiety. It doesn’t always affect me. It’s also not a clinical diagnosis but it’s no less important. More often than not, the anxiety that I find myself experiencing is rooted back to something that I could have controlled. This is not the case for everyone. My anxiety is known to be triggered by over-analyzing and hyperfocusing on a variety of things/situations.

I’ve been led down a spiraling, dark hole whenever my focus has been on others opinions. Did I have something to do with that downward spiral? Absolutely! I let those thoughts consume me. Why did I let it get to that point? In the moment, I have no idea. But, it’s not something that I pre-plan, analyze and then say, “Let’s do this, Anxiety!”. In retrospect, I allowed one thought to lead to the other, and so on. [/vc_column_text][mk_padding_divider size=”20″][mk_blockquote style=”line-style” font_family=”Nunito” font_type=”google”]We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (NASB) – 2 Corinthians 10:5 [/mk_blockquote][mk_padding_divider size=”20″][vc_column_text]I want to share with you my thought process when I find the need to redirect myself and keep my mind in check:

“Is this ‘opinion’ an actual opinion or did I come up with that?”

This may sound silly but it’s such a real thing. Too often I find myself so far off that I start believing the lies that I’ve allowed my mind to make up. It is so, SO important to keep track of your thoughts! If we take the time to backtrack on a thought process we’ve had, we’ll see how early on we allowed ourselves to derail. What leads to this derailing and formulation of a made-up narrative? Purposeless or lingering thoughts and more often, insecurities of our own.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Once I’ve assessed if the opinion is real or not, I ask myself “Is this opinion valid?”

As often as possible, I try to analyze and seek opportunities for introspection and self-improvement. Do I like to do that? NO. Never. I’m pretty much perfect, right? Facing our flaws is never something that is enjoyable. Are the process and outcome rewarding? For sure.

Look, it’s always easier to point the finger elsewhere. So, we must be fair and take our pride out of the picture. That being said though, seeking opportunities for growth through introspection doesn’t mean you should doubt yourself first and immediately value the other opinion. We have to be wise and maintain balance This balance sits on a thin line but it’s there. I promise.

More often than not, the opinion being questioned is not valid. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.”  – Marcus Aurelius[/mk_blockquote][mk_padding_divider size=”20″][vc_column_text]When we train ourselves to be strong and we develop the habit of being mindful, we’re then able to stop ourselves in the middle of a thought process and really analyze what’s happening and what is making us feel whatever it is we’re feeling. It’s important for us to be honest with ourselves and dig deep within. When you’ve analyzed yourself and you still come across opinions that fall under the “invalid” category, I want you to remind yourself of these things:[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

  • You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Ever.
  • People will always have an opinion about the things you do/don’t do and believe.
  • Discover, develop and love yourself. 
  • Believe in your self-worth and don’t use outside opinions as a scale to gauge value and worth.
  • Let them misunderstand you because your journey has been a long one. Not all have endured it with you. They don’t know how far you’ve come, alone.
  • Your values won’t align with everyone so what is “good” for you won’t be good for someone else. 
  • You will never please everyone. I know you’ve heard this one before but have you actually chewed on those words, let them settle in your heart and made them your own? You can’t be everything to everyone.
